Collections with Savoir Faire!

You certainly cannot beat these two images for some decorating ideas! I love collecting things however my collections pale to insignificance with these two examples.

The collection of white opaline glass on the white shelf against this blue wall is stunning. The white creates such a dramatic impact against the blue.

The next one of white ceramics in this white cabinet has just as much dramatic impact as the blue and white above, but in an entirely different way. Just the small hint of brown and black add a just a bit more savoir faire to an otherwise stunning display!

  1. Those collections of white vases against the blue are FAB. Blue and white is such a clean and striking colour combination.

  3. These are great examples! When I see blue and white done like this, it leaves me longing for some in my own house!

  4. The first one is dramatic indeed. The crispness is spot on. The white on white is my pick though - so clean :)

  5. Some of the pieces in the first picture, the open bowls that are footed, were used for floral arrangements in the 60s and 70s. They can usually be picked up at flea markets for a few dollars. I use them with votive candles for evening garden parties and they give a pretty, diffuse light. In winter I put some rolled up cotton cloth soaked in water and put them in front of the hot air vents for humidification and they look like elegant urns rather than something utilitarian.

It takes a lot of self discipline to limit one's self to multiple pieces in a neutral palette. Certainly objects benefit from being displayed with others that relate in material, colour or subject, but I think when done in large doses it looks too "decorated" and lacks sponteneity. That said I'd rather see something look too decorated than so many homes where no thought has been given to harmony or overall effect. I've been in too many Toronto homes that combine Danish modern teak with bad French provincial, and the look leaves a lot to be desired.

  7. beautiful! I have a collection of cobalt blue wedgwood jasperware and how to display it now that the collection is overwhelmingly large is something of a problem. They currently reside on my bookshelf in front of books -maybe on a shelf in front of a white wall? hmmm.... this is good inspiration.

  8. I am glad that this has been a source of inspiration to many as it has me. I have a hallway that is screaming for something like this and am just trying to incorporate my own take on this

    Leah, welcome to savoir faire!
