Mr Ford and Spring

Tom Ford has always been a favourite of mine from his early days at Gucci, his few collections for Yves Saint Laurent and now under his own label. He is the epitome of savoir faire and modern dandyism. Forever stylish it seems that he has been born with an inherent gene of good taste and style. Mind you some of his choices I have not always agreed with. His advertising campaign for his fragrances was one of these choices. The fragrances themselves are brilliant, the bottle design wonderful, the advertising campaign not so much. I thought it was cheap and nasty from a savoir faire point of few.

Now this brings us to his collection for men for Spring Summer 2011. While loving Spring Summer 2010, this year’s collection is a lot more refined.

Where as 2010 there was a large emphasis on pattern and colour which would make the average man in the street run a mile, I think this season’s collection has something for everyone.

Classic styling with Mr. Ford’s characteristic vibe is still there, which begs me to ask the question, does Mr. Ford continuously draw his inspiration from the past, or is he afraid to experiment with new lines. That said, the styling and lines are classic, so there are no surprises there.

The pattern and the texture is still there, however it is not the emphasis of the collection. Pattern is there if you want it, if not there are plenty of other pieces to choose from.

Colours are more in keeping with what the modern man wants. While not exploring any singular group of colours, there is a wide range to satisfy even the most reticent among us with something.

What do you think?

  1. Hello David:
How wonderful that we have you to keep us up to date in the fashion stakes. From the collection which you show here, we are rather drawn to the pinks, lavenders and crushed raspberry tints and tones.

But, happily, the black and white in which we are most often to be seen is not out of favour with Mr. Ford. Yes, he is timelessly classic, for which we love him!

  2. Ok...this is my issue with the line. It always seems that Tom Ford is designing clothes to sell to his fans that he would never wear himself. I like Ford's personal style better than his fashions for men.
On the other hand, he has designed a pair of men's purple suede loafers that I would die for....

  6. I too adore Ford's talents, have several pairs of his very flattering sunglasses, and like you have loved him from his Gucci days, it seems that everyone this season is drawing from the days of disco...I think Tom Ford was just ahead of the curve on this one.

  7. Yes, Tom Ford is a terrific designer with both taste and business savvy. I think he has a lot more talent than most of the designers today. The clothes are actually wearable and suited to real functions one needs clothes for...party, theater, interview, church, work, wedding, or leisure.

Note that Ford maintains the 1940s silhouette and wide lapels when other designers have gone tight, constrictive, and narrow. I much prefer the Ford silhouette, that which we would see on Cary Grant in the days when men aspired to elegance.

I'm glad he sticks to his guns and doesn't follow the crowd. He knows what makes a person looks good, and he understands quality. In the truest sense, he has style.

  8. Hmmm...I like the pink more than that lavender.
Who'dathunk I'd have ever been writing that sentence?

  10. David, in my eyes Tom Ford can do no wrong. It is all in the tailoring, of course, and the choice of fabrics. I looked through the pictures several times and the only thing that is obvious to me is the fact that this collection is more for younger men. It is fresh, buitifully executed and ,yes, I would buy one of the suits for my younger brother if I would have one. WIhing you wonderful Easter!:-)))

  12. I get quite lost with clothes myself and stick mainly to my jeans and black or navy blue polo shirts. That is for casual. But I would love to wear a hat!
