Changing Moods

The Eden Roc Hotel in Miami has long been a favourite of the jet-set since its opening in 1956. Designed in the Miami Modern Style by Morris Lapidus, who went on to design the Fontainbleau it is a testament to great design.

One distinguishing part of the hotel is the lobby, which still retains (even after successive renovations) the original aesthetic of the design.

I love the fact that at certain times during the day and with different lighting the mood of the space changes dramatically.

Bright, light and airy during the day and cozy intimatae and warm during the evening!

  1. Hello David:
The 'Miami Modern Style' seems an absolutely perfect description for this hotel which is so reminiscent of the late 1950s in design and paint colour.

The hotel lobby has reassuringly kept its integrity and we are so pleased that the red lampshades now seem to have disappeared. For us, they were the only jarring note.

  2. I thought about you and vintage travel this week as I was reading the Southwest magazine during my flight home from Las Vegas. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the airline, the magazine cover image was of a group of Southwest stewardesses in their uniforms of bright orange tunics, orange hot pants and white boots. Classic.

  3. I love to play with lights — uplights, recessed lights, track lights, candles — lighting is such a fun and easy way to achieve moods, as you've so ably demonstrated. The next time I'm in Miami (it's not too far), I'll look for the Eden Roc Hotel!

  5. Now that is a lobby. What magnificent design. Didn't you know some of the best things (me) were built in 1956?!

    Have a lovely weekend David.

  8. Fabulous! I regret my family were Fontainbleau
people during my youth, and thus I missed out the visual delight of "The Roc".
